Luis “Coroncoro” Perea

Luis Carlos Perea, nicknamed “Coroncoro,” is a Colombian former professional footballer widely regarded as one of the greatest defenders the country has ever produced. Born on December 29, 1963, in Turbo, Antioquia, Perea built an impressive career that spanned over two decades, leaving an indelible mark on Colombian and South American football. He is the 4th most capped player for the Colombian National team and he leaves behind a legacy of dedication and exceptional defensive play.

Club Career
Perea’s professional journey began in 1984 with Deportivo Independiente Medellin. His talent and dedication quickly made him a mainstay in the team’s defense. In 1987, he joined Atletico Nacional, and remained until 1990 in his first stint, where he played a pivotal role in their historic Copa Libertadores triumph in 1989, solidifying his place as a defensive stalwart not only in Colombia but across the continent. He returned for a second stint in 1997-1998, leading this world class club to triumphs at the Copa Merconorte – 1998 and Copa Interamericana – 1990 and 1997.

Perea’s success with Atletico Nacional earned him a move to Deportivo Independiente Medellin in 1991. He continued to excel in his new club, showcasing his impressive defensive prowess and leadership qualities. He remained with Deportivo Independiente Medellin until 1993 before returning to Atletico Nacional for a second stint.

International Career
Perea’s talents weren’t limited to the club level. He was also a crucial member of the Colombian National team. He represented his country on the international stage, participating in the 1990 and 1994 FIFA World Cups, Copa América 1987, 1989, 1991 and 1993, Copa Libertadores Champions – 1989, Copa Merconorte Champions – 1998, and Copa Interamericana Champions – 1990 and 1997 tournaments among other prestigious international events. His leadership and defensive presence were instrumental in Colombia’s success during his international career.

Playing Style
Perea was renowned for his strong physical presence on the field. He possessed excellent tackling skills, aerial prowess, and a remarkable ability to read the game.
